Did you realize that dryer lint not only forms on the walls of your venting, but can also distribute throughout your dryer's internal components? One of the worst places for lint to accumulate is on or near your heating element. Despite how meticulous you are with cleaning your lint filter/screen, this can still occur, as well as the buildup of lint in the exhaust vent.

All too often, this preventive maintenance is the most overlooked, or neglected, routine. To keep your dryer running at its optimal performance, and possibly, lengthen your appliance's lifespan, we recommend annual or, at the worst, bi-annual dryer and vent cleanings.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Consumer Affairs, 4% of all household fires involved the use of a clothes dryer, whereas 32% of those fires were directly related to a failure to “adequately clean the dryer”. It is to be noted that “dust, fiber, or lint” were the leading ignition source. By following some best practices you can eliminate the dangers and performance issues associated with built-up dryer lint.

Should you have your dryer vent cleaned?

Do's:

  • Clean your lint filter/screen regularly. Typically, before and after each load of laundry.

  • Have your dryer vents professionally cleaned, especially if you find your dryer is taking too long or multiple cycles to dry your laundry.

  • Inspect your vent connection on the rear of the dryer to ensure it is connected securely.

  • Check your outdoor vent exhaust to ensure there is no debris, nests, or insects/animals.

  • Ensure all electrical and gas connections are properly secured/plugged in.

Don'ts:

  • Do not use your dryer if it has a damaged, loose, broken or missing the lint filter/screen.

  • Do not leave your dryer running unattended, such as sleeping or out of the house.

  • Do not overload your dryer.

What are the benefits of a clean dryer and vent?

There are numerous benefits to a clean dryer and dryer vent, and it doesn't matter if you decide to tackle the job yourself or hire a professional to do it.

Dryer Efficiency: If your dryer is running optimally, it decreases electric usage and/or gas usage, as it doesn't take as long to dry a load of laundry.

Dryer Lifespan: Believe it or not, keeping your dryer clean as well as the venting, puts less strain on the mechanical parts and can increase the lifespan of your machine.

Prevention of Fires: This is pretty self-explanatory. No one wants a household fire.

Air Particles: Cleaning your vents and dryer of all lint, ensures less particles in the air, which in turn, leads to cleaner breathing.

Damaged Venting: While having your vent and dryer cleaned, or doing it yourself, you'll get to inspect your venting to ensure proper sealing, that you have no damaged components, and no animals or insects have built nests in your vent or exhaust hood.
